About the Weganda Gallery
Weganda Gallery operates under the auspices of the Weganda Foundation nonprofit organization, which has published The Weganda Review literary quarterly since 2023. The Weganda Foundation’s stated mission is to be a superior force for intellectual culture in Uganda and across Africa. The gallery was launched in May 2025 by founding curator Rodney Muhumuza, who put up a show of his private collection in an exhibition that sought to democratize the love of art in Uganda.
The gallery is committed to exhibiting the important artists of our time, creative men and women whose works would hang in the national gallery if Uganda had one. The range of gallery spaces in Kampala today underscores the evolution of the city as a cultural hub with tremendous potential, albeit one whose inhabitants are not quite alive to the treasures bursting forth from the brilliant minds of our artists.
Weganda Gallery hopes to be an agent of change, in that it is possible for people to see beauty and artistic merit if and when they encounter it, if and when it is presented in a compelling way. We aim to put up museum-quality exhibitions that are visually pleasing but also thoughtful in ways that force us to take art seriously. In other words, we should not give up on those who build luxurious villas and decorate them with calendars, or those who view beautiful pictures and react as if they have been hit by a cold wind, or even those who simply don’t know that there can be no life without art.
The gallery is located in Bugolobi, an upscale suburb of Kampala, Uganda’s capital. It is open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visits on Sunday at strictly by appointment.
